Ben McLees Another beautiful, evocative, deeply moving and transportative album from CUTS; whose work deserves to be regarded as highly as that of Loscil, Lawrence English & Abul Mogard. Favorite track: Adrift In Flood Water Under The Gloam Of An Unfathomable Void.

about

All That Was Lost & Other Failures was written in the spring of 2020. A collection of improvised pieces written at the same time as the previous album UNREAL.

This album was written during the days of the first Covid lockdown in spring 2020. It was a strange time. My daily routine was a walk in the morning to get in the daily allowed exercise. I’d take my Zoom Hn4 out with me and record the sound of modern life in suspension. The sound of humans at the time slightly worrying, the sound of other forms of life returning, life affirming. The dystopian era of late capitalism stopped and there were empty skies above. A brief, fleeting & all too short respite for mother nature.

I’d go back with the field recordings, make tape loops and stick the field recordings along side them. Nothing too clever or groundbreaking. That’s the basis of this record. It’s a reflective collection of improvisations using simple techniques to explore my feelings of isolation. Covid was new, the feelings it brought were definitely not.

In the evenings I’d jam and make noise & those pieces ended up as the album UNREAL. I wanted to release these records together or close to each other as they are one of the same to me but due to many unforeseen obstacles & complications out of my control it didn't happen.

I wanted to originally release this on tape. I hope to do a tape release as I think it would sound great & It’s my favourite format.

I’m glad this is finally seeing the light of day. Don’t judge the pieces too harshly. Hours were not poured over them. They were just improvisations capturing a moment in time & doing them kept me sane. An older track was added to this collection, Flatlining. It fitted with the album so I added it to the pre-sale.

I moved into a new house 3 days before lockdown & made the school boy error of not checking phone signal or internet connection. There was none..of either. In a way I’m glad. Had there been, I would have probably surrendered to old habits of binge drinking. losing time, procrastinating and trying to find something decent to watch on Netflix. Thank fuck for that.

This record feels like the last of this current iteration of my art. Maybe I'll get the enthusiasm for another one or something new will come along and replace it...or not. Who knows.

Hope you enjoy and if you’re reading this and are still here, thanks a bunch for your support. It means the world.

In loving memory of my later mother Mary & my beautiful sister Amy. Not a day goes by when I don't think of you both.

Love & light. A.
